First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}

Thanks for uploading Image:Southwold_Lighthouse.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Thanks[edit]

Thanks for adding the source information and sorry about being too quick to tag the images as lacking it. I've replied further on my talk page. Regards. Adambro 00:13, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

IMF[edit]

Hi, please see my discussion here- I do not believe that all material on the imf website is in the public domain- please see discussion here Commons:Village_pump#Clarification_needed_over_IMF_material. Gustav VH 09:59, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How many places DID you post this info, and why so many?   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 17:09, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summary[edit]

When editing a page on Commons there is a small field labeled "Edit Summary" or "Summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the Edit Summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the Edit Summary field. If you are adding a section, please do not just keep the previous section's name in the Edit Summary field - please fill in your new section's name instead. Thank you.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 17:10, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure they're the same person. They seem to have similar interests, but then, it's likely that our nominator was looking around certain categories and saw a ton of files by this guy.

I guess we could just ask. Lewis Collard! (hai thar, wut u doin) 10:49, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hm. You might have a point there. Lemme think. Lewis Collard! (hai thar, wut u doin) 11:02, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about the mistagging of that image entry, too many windows and too many languages.

I'm also sorry if I missed you adding more entries into the main list, I had a shadow copy in my en:wiki userspace where I was trying to keep track of progress and recruit some Canadians to the cause, and put the progress back into commons. I'll stop trying to do that now.

I also had some "typical" notices I was planning to put up at the other sites: [1], and I was going to try to track that on my upage, I don't know what you think of that.

I do think it would be good to put some sections into the commons page, so at least two people can work on it at once, also maybe it would be easier to see what is changing where. There's a lot of work to do, so I'm not sure reverting is the way to go here. Anyway, cheers! Franamax 12:59, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

McCain[edit]

Hi, I'm planning on reverting this file to what was originally received from McCain's office. Any objections? Please see the talk page for that image.Ferrylodge 20:57, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Canada-American copyright[edit]

I'm trying to draft a user guide to ensuring works are PD in both Canada and the US at User:Padraic/PD - please feel free to pitch in. Also, see Template talk:PD-Canada for more discussion on this issue. --Padraic 16:51, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Roger Moore[edit]

Hi. I'm afria you have got the licencing rules somewhat backwards - we don't need to suspect a copyvio to delete an image, but we need proof that an image is NOT a copyvio to keep it. In the case of that image, there was no source information and so no way of knowing whether it was a copyvio or not. The original uploader on commons was User:Chico. -mattbuck (Talk) 13:46, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pretty much. -mattbuck (Talk) 00:11, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It gave the web address http://www.n28.de, which I checked - it's just a single line of text. -mattbuck (Talk) 12:42, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

audio file from 1935[edit]

Hi,

thank you for the hint. It is obviously German. Well, I hope you can give me the answer that I wish to hear. thank you again: Europe is already sleeping! Good night!

Screenshots[edit]

Hi, I don't really understand what you mean by DVD resolution. Some of the images are taken from sources that offer a very poor resolution, and this is basically the best I can do. I'm not sure what you mean by DVD resolution in any case, but if there's something I can do to improve the image quality, let me know. Also, I'm not sure about the necessity for uploading an uncropped image, although it depends on the image. If you can give an example - most of the images I've uploaded I've done specifically to populate infoboxes, and I've intentionally cropped them accordingly, because in most cases the background isn't important, in that context. Rossrs (talk) 12:13, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also - I'd be happy to oblige with the full images but the fact is that most of the images, I found and saved months ago, and have been gradually uploading as time permits. In most cases, I don't have an uncropped version. If there are specific images that you think would be more useful in their complete form, I could backtrack and try to find them. Rossrs (talk) 12:15, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Like I said before, I haven't saved uncropped shots but I'll see what I can do. Rossrs (talk) 22:04, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
